My Role

During my early months in the project, I worked with a senior designer and helped in updating the existing designs, gather requirements, and design presentations. The team was composed of a BA, several developers, and a project lead. After several months, I was assigned to be the dedicated designer of the project.

As the solo designer of the project I still do the things I did before but on a more involved manner. I partner with our BA during discussion sessions to ask clarifications and get some direct insights from the client.

Process

Since there was an existing design in place, and we are working on an Agile environment I used rapid prototyping, and desk research to validate and understand more about the features I am designing. Quickly asking for feedback once my concept is available, was a strategy I used. That time, I didn’t know that this was part of Lean UX methodology.

When my initial design concepts are approved, I conduct quick feasibility check sessions with our developers to identify parts of the designs that may be too difficult or time consuming to implement. If some design elements are identified, I will raise this to our BA, and eventually get an approval from the client for the changes.

After all of the approvals, I will then create high-fi mockups and prototypes to be presented to the client and the whole team. This process is repeated until a feature is complete, and to the next feature to be tackled in the board.

After several months of Sprints and UAT tests, the Digital Supporter Suite MVP pilot was launched. The client and users (auditors) were happy with the MVP we delivered. The initial goal was achieved, and all the things they needed for their day-to-day tasks are inside a single application. This helped them to work more efficiently, without having to juggle several spreadsheets and tools.

The Outcome

Also, because of the team's initial success, the client decided to continue to bring in new features to the project. Thus, Roster Management, Self-Serve Audit, and Training Library modules were added along the period of the project, each with its own story and experiences to tell.

Learnings

Learnings

Time Management - This was one of the two projects I handled as a UX Designer at the same time. Having this project alone was a challenge, but having two at the same time as an entry-level UX Designer was really a challenge in all facets. Nonetheless, it was a challenge I couldn't be more thankful and proud that I accepted head-on.

Actual vs. Theory - I thought I could follow all the steps I learned in every UX Design course I came across on the internet, from Discovery to Testing phase. But that was not the case in an actual setting because budget and timeline constraints affect what goes into the product, that includes omitting or simplifying some phases of a design process.

How might we create a better tool for the client that will help their auditors be efficient on their day-to-day auditing tasks?
